How can you make a difference? Key functions / Responsibilities
The Community Health Assistant supports the implementation of community health activities in the areas affected by the earthquake, contributing to the early identification of health risks, promotion of healthy practices, community participation, community surveillance of health events and strengthening of referral mechanisms to available services.
The position will contribute to reducing the risks of illness and psychosocial impacts through preventive interventions and community mobilization.
He/She will be in charge of.
- Support health promotion and disease prevention activities in affected communities.
- Facilitate risk communication and community participation
- Identify and report community alerts related to public health.
- Support the identification and referral of people with medical care or psychosocial support needs.
- Contribute to the processes of monitoring and collecting community information.
A. Community Health Promotion
- Conduct individual and group educational sessions on:
- Prevention of communicable diseases.
- Personal and environmental hygiene.
- Safe water consumption.
- Safe waste management.
- Prevention of respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases.
- Injury and accident prevention in post-earthquake contexts.
- Distribute and explain the proper use of informational materials and kits related to health and hygiene.
- Adapting health messages to the needs and context of the community.
B. Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE)
- Disseminate messages validated by the technical team.
- Identify rumors, risk perceptions, and community concerns.
- Record and transmit community feedback.
- Promote the active participation of community leaders and organizations in health activities.
C. Community Surveillance
- Identify and report promptly:
- Suspected cases of priority diseases.
- Unusual outbreaks or clusters.
- Events related to water, sanitation and hygiene.
- Environmental risks that may affect health.
- Support the monitoring of community alerts according to established protocols.
D. Referral and Follow-up
- Identify people who require medical attention, psychosocial support, or protection.
- Provide information about available services.
- Facilitate referral mechanisms established by the response.
- Conduct community follow-up when required by the program.
E. Information Collection and Reporting
- Complete forms and use monitoring tools.
- Support rapid surveys and community assessments.
- Prepare periodic reports of activities performed.
- Maintain up-to-date and confidential records.
F. Operational Support
- Participate in planning and coordination meetings.
- Support community mobilization and distribution activities when required.
- Collaborate with other sectors (WASH, Protection, Temporary Accommodation and Livelihoods) to address identified risks.
5. Expected Results
- Effective coverage of health promotion activities in assigned communities.
- Detection and timely reporting of health alerts.
- Increased access to available health services for vulnerable populations.
- Maintaining complete and timely records.
- Active participation of the community in preventive actions.
Report
The Community Health Assistant will report to the Health Coordinator or, failing that, to the Health Officer, according to the current structure and work plan.
Workplace
Caracas (Headquarters of the Venezuelan Red Cross), with availability to travel nationwide.
To qualify as a builder of the Venezuelan humanitarian system, you must meet the following requirements:
- General practitioner, nurse
- Desired minimum 1 year of experience in community work.
- Desirable experience in emergencies, disasters or humanitarian programs.
- Experience in community mobilization activities will be considered an advantage.
- Commitment to the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent.
- Organizational, communication and teamwork skills.
