A Waste Management Expert (M/F/D)
for the Luxembourg Red Cross International Aid mission in Chad on a 12-month fixed-term contract starting in May 2026 – renewable – Status: unaccompanied
The position is based in Abéché, in eastern Chad, with travel to intervention sites in the Ouaddaï province and other regions of Chad.
The projects to be implemented consist of assistance to displaced and/or vulnerable populations in the areas of shelter, Water, Hygiene and Sanitation with a strong environmental component, consisting of the management of waste related to the crisis in Eastern Chad and more particularly the transformation of plastic waste into latrine slabs as well as the production of organic charcoal from agricultural residues.
Missions :
- Coordination : ensuring coordination of humanitarian actors in the field of waste collection and processing, organizing and monitoring coordination meetings and tools; participating in the dissemination of information at the local, national and international levels; developing and updating monitoring tools and indicators;
- Environmental monitoring:Â Ensure the implementation of the environmental and social management plan in alignment with the environmental permit for the operation of the sorting and recovery unit and also develop the environmental monitoring document;
- Project management : contribute to the identification and drafting of projects in the field of waste management and the environment; supervise the implementation and monitoring of indicators of ongoing projects such as support for the operation of the Red Cross of Chad’s Waste Transformation and Recovery Unit in Abéché and support for the waste management plan of the City of Abéché;
- Conceptualization and production of awareness-raising materials : contribute to the production of tools for the operation of waste collection and processing activities, ensure the production of communication and awareness-raising tools and participate in the dissemination of these tools.
- Research for innovations : participate in defining research themes and implementing studies related to waste transformation in coordination with the Shelter Research Unit (SRU) of the AICRL.
Profile :
- Higher education (Bac+5) in the field of the environment or in the field of plastic waste management and recycling;
- 3 years of professional experience, preferably including one year on a humanitarian mission;
- Experience in the fields of housing, WASH, environment, waste management, waste recycling, business management and monitoring the implementation of an Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) on a waste recycling project.
- Knowledge and experience in international politics and context analysis, as well as in the security contexts of Sub-Saharan Africa;
- Essential computer skills: Office, Kobo/odk, Power BI, GIS software;
- Excellent command of spoken and written French and knowledge of spoken and written English
- Excellent skills in intercultural and international communication, negotiation and humanitarian coordination;
- Ability to manage stress and pressure, responsiveness, versatility;
- Ease and experience in dealing with national authorities, as well as with national and international partners;
- Experience within the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is an asset.
