Intern at the International Emergency Response Unit – HR support for the management of ERU/RR volunteers, network facilitation and operational support At French Red Cross

Mission

The International Emergency Unit (PUI) is part of the Disaster Risk Management and Emergency Department within the International Operations Directorate (DOI).

The intern will be tasked with supporting the team in all activities related to emergency response and the management of the volunteer network (in-person and remote events, monitoring of volunteer files, etc.).

Emergency Response Teams (ERUs) are made up of volunteers who provide support to a National Red Cross/Red Crescent Society present in a country affected by one or more disasters. The French Red Cross (CRF) ERUs comprise nearly 350 trained volunteers in five priority areas:

  • health
  • water, hygiene and sanitation
  • the distribution of essential goods
  • logistics
  • psychosocial support

Most ERU members are professionals working in various organizations related to one of the aforementioned priority sectors. Following a disaster, ERU members can be made available within 48 to 72 hours of the alert being triggered, for a field mission lasting from 3 weeks to 1 month.

These teams are subject to validation by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), which manages the system at the global level. This allows the various Emergency Response Units (ERUs) of the Red Cross Movement to work closely together in all areas of intervention, thanks to joint training, regular exercises, and standardized equipment.

Since 2002, the French Red Cross Emergency Response Units (ERUs) have conducted more than 60 emergency operations in a variety of crisis situations: earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, epidemics, food crises, population displacements…

In parallel, a pool of Rapid Response (RR) personnel is being developed, consisting of specialized personnel deployed within 48 hours for a period of 1 to 3 months.
