General context of the project
INTERSOS has been present in Chad since 2004 with projects in the sectors of food security, protection, health-nutrition and also WASH for internally displaced people in the Lake region and for Sudanese refugees in eastern Chad. After a break in activities in 2016, INTERSOS resumed its activities in 2017. The areas on which INTERSOS Chad focuses its interventions are mainly the following: Protection through the strengthening of an environment conducive to the promotion and protection of human rights and more specifically those of children and women through the establishment of Child-Friendly Spaces, GBV case management, restoration of social cohesion, community rehabilitation, but also access to water, hygiene and sanitation, food security and health/nutrition.
General objective of the position
The Environment Manager will be responsible for the implementation, capacity building and monitoring of activities for the protection or preservation of the environment through the partners (National NGOs) of the consortium, in line with the objectives and activities of the overall project.
Main responsibilities and tasks
Technical implementation of activities for environmental protection.
- Planning and coordination of activities for the protection and/or preservation of the project environment.
- Technical support to local partners (national NGOs, farmers’ organizations/associations and Government) for the implementation of environmental protection activities
- Popularization of project assets/products (Bio digesters, etc.) and good agro-pastoral practices or techniques with low impact on climate change (biopesticides, agro-pastoral agroforestry, etc.).
- Support local initiatives to promote good agro-pastoral techniques or practices with low impact on climate change
- Initiate innovative actions to strengthen community resilience for environmental protection.
- Support communities in preparing for and managing risks and disasters (floods, etc.) by prioritizing: i) community preparedness (awareness raising and creation/training of local committees), ii) protection of community property and infrastructure (construction of dikes, etc.), iii) the community early warning system.
Capacity building.
- Development or design of training modules on environmental protection, including sustainable management of natural resources.
- Design of appropriate tools adapted to the local context and the project for environmental protection.
- Organization of training for local partners and beneficiaries
- Popularization of appropriate tools for environmental protection
- Organization of community awareness sessions on environmental protection.
- Promoting the reduction of harmful practices with a high impact on climate change and/or the environment.
Monitoring, evaluation and reporting
- Develop environmental monitoring indicators in conjunction with the MEAL department and in accordance with the overall project.
- Monitoring of indicators of local partners in the implementation of activities.
- Ensure regular reporting on activities carried out.
- Carry out environmental impact assessments of project activities.
- Capitalization and/or documentation of good practices and lessons learned.
- Systematic supervision of activities for environmental protection
Coordination and partnerships
- Establishment of an internal coordination mechanism for the activities of the other components of the project (Agriculture/Livestock, Protection, Wash) linked to the activities for environmental protection and in coordination with the Project Manager.
- Identification of technical partners and synergy opportunities.
- Participation in meetings and/or spaces for humanitarian and resilience coordination at the provincial level on environmental protection.
- Organization of bilateral coordination with other actors/NGOs
- Participation in coordination meetings with local authorities.
Required profile
Education
- Advanced university degree in Environment, Natural Resource Management, Agroecology, Rural Development or equivalent field.
Professional Experience
- 2 years of experience in a similar position, preferably in the Sahelian context.
- Experience in projects integrating sustainable agriculture, environment or climate change and community development.
- Experience with an international NGO is a major asset.
Professional requirements
- Good knowledge of environmental conservation techniques and sustainable agricultural systems.
- Community mobilization and training skills.
- Mastery of monitoring-evaluation and reporting tools.
- Good writing skills.
