This internship is part of an academic, professional, or socio-professional integration training program and must meet the conditions set by the Employment Market Monitoring Council (CSME). The duration of the internship, as defined by the tripartite agreement, is 6 to 12 months at 100%.

Context & Mission

Doctors Without Borders is an independent international medical and humanitarian organization that provides care to people in need, to people affected by natural or man-made disasters and to victims of armed conflict, without discrimination and without regard to race, religion, beliefs or political affiliation (MSF Charter).

Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) is a medical humanitarian organization founded in 1971 by doctors and journalists. The Swiss section was established in 1981 in Geneva. MSF provides medical assistance to populations whose lives are threatened by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters, or exclusion from healthcare. MSF is funded more than 95% by the generosity of its private donors.

The Philanthropy unit is one of the 6 business units within the Department of Communication and Fundraising. Composed of 17 people, it raised over CHF 70 million last year from individuals, foundations, companies and Cantons/Municipalities.

The Fundraising Intern will work closely with all members of the Philanthropy unit, the Communications and Fundraising department, and other MSF departments. The intern will develop skills in communication, database management, and donor relations, while contributing to MSF’s humanitarian mission.

The intern will provide administrative support as well as fundraising activities within the Philanthropy unit.

Main responsibilities

Support for Fundraising Activities

  • Database updated with new information (addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, etc.)
  • Drafting and processing thank-you letters
  • Assistance with monitoring contact portfolios (cantons/municipalities, companies, foundations, etc.)
  • Occasional support for event organization
  • Telephone contacts with certain donors for ad hoc projects
  • Support for loyalty and reactivation activities across different target audiences
  • Participation in the search for specific information on major donors (companies, foundations, individuals, and cantons/municipalities)
  • Support for translation and proofreading (French/English; other languages ​​desirable)
  • Assistance with drafting and proofreading files, fundraising appeals (proposals), reports, and PowerPoint presentations for major donors

Administrative support

  • Support for tracking donations
  • Participation and submission of minutes from the cell meetings
  • Preparation of micro-mailings (formatting, mail merge, sending)
  • Assistance with recruiting the next intern
  • As a conclusion to the internship, the intern will be asked to develop and present a document on a development axis of philanthropy, of interest to the intern within the framework of their academic course and for the benefit of the philanthropy unit, agreed upon beforehand.

Desired profile

  • Currently enrolled in or completing a higher education program
  • To be eligible for an internship agreement with a third party
  • Experience in the non-profit and/or humanitarian sectors is an asset.
  • Previous experience (internship or other) welcome
  • Excellent writing and summarizing skills
  • Professional curiosity and a willingness to learn
  • Flexibility and team spirit
  • Strong interest in humanitarian work
  • Excellent command of French
  • Excellent command of English
  • Knowledge of German and Italian: an asset
  • Proficiency in standard computer tools (MS Office suite, 365)
  • CRM experience is a plus
  • Proactivity, autonomy, initiative, rigor and organizational skills
  • Good ability to adapt to a multicultural work environment

Working conditions

  • Mandatory tripartite internship agreement
  • 6 to 9 month internship at 100% (depending on the internship agreement)
  • Based in Geneva
  • Effective date: 16.03.2026
  • Gross monthly salary: CHF 2,000.-
