The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) regional delegation is opening a full-time position for a Communication Officer,based in Warsaw.

The ICRC is an impartial, neutral, and independent organization whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence and to provide them with assistance. The ICRC also endeavors to prevent suffering by promoting and strengthening international humanitarian law (IHL) and universal humanitarian principles.

The ICRC regional delegation in Poland contributes to the ICRC’s humanitarian response to the international armed conflict between the Russian Federation and Ukraine in the countries bordering Ukraine, Belorussia and Russia, helping reunite families separated by the conflict, supporting the work of the National Red Cross societies, working with national authorities, and strengthening respect for international humanitarian law and humanitarian principles.

Purpose of the position

The Communication Officer assists in developing, planning, and executing prevention and communication projects under the guidance of the Communication and Prevention Manager. This role involves close collaboration with national Red Cross societies. The Communication Officer also helps promote international humanitarian law and Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (the Movement), while striving to build understanding, acceptance, and support for the ICRC among key stakeholders.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop and define communication, outreach, and prevention strategies in alignment with regional goals and priorities of the ICRC.
  • Implement activities and develop tools to strengthen the communication and prevention capacities of national Red Cross societies, including the promotion of international humanitarian law (IHL) and Fundamental Principles.
  • Monitor and contribute to the planning and execution of activities related to the promotion of the ICRC emblem and communication partnerships.
  • Organize and support public events such as round tables and conferences to promote IHL and other relevant themes.
  • Support the Communication and Prevention Manager in building networks with relevant actors of influence and represent the ICRC across diverse forums.
  • Stay updated on political, security, military, and humanitarian developments in the region and provide analytical contributions to assess the impact on ICRC’s reputation and operations.
  • Provide logistical support for events, manage communication materials stocks, maintain contact lists, and ensure proper archiving.
  • Assist in translating and interpreting documents and communications from and into Polish as required.
  • Support national Red Cross societies in the production of communication materials by gathering content, liaising with production specialists, and managing publication tools.
  • Monitor media and other information sources to advise on trends and developments that could affect the humanitarian landscape, in the absence of Regional Communications Officer.

Professional experience and education required

  • University degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as communications, education, political science, or international relations.
  • Knowledge of international humanitarian law (IHL) is a strong advantage.
  • Fluent in Polish and English. Knowledge of other languages spoken in the region is an advantage.
  • Computer proficiency.
  • Three years of previous working experience in a similar function. Previous experience within the Movement or in an international organisation is an advantage.
  • ICRC experience is an advantage, as well as any dissemination experience.
  • Proficiency in computer skills, particularly MS Office; familiarity with digital communication and social media tools.
  • Sound knowledge of the political, social, and humanitarian environment in the country/region covered.
