Refugee Engagement Officer – UNICEF Poland At UN Volunteers

Mission and objectives

For 40 years, UNICEF has financed programs to help children in Poland, bought equipment for health centers, and imported raw materials for the production of children’s articles. During martial law, National Committees from Western Europe provided Polish children with medicines, clothes and supplements.

Since 2002, the scope of UNICEF’s activities in Poland has changed. Like other highly developed countries, UNICEF currently focuses its activities in Poland on promoting and protecting children’s rights and collecting funds to help children in the most needy regions of the world.

Context

The fundamental mission of UNICEF is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the organization does — in programs, in advocacy and in operations. The equity strategy, emphasizing the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families, translates this commitment to children’s rights into action. For UNICEF, equity means that all children have an opportunity to survive, develop and reach their full potential, without discrimination, bias or favoritism. To the degree that any child has an unequal chance in life — in its social, political, economic, civic and cultural dimensions — her or his rights are violated. There is growing evidence that investing in the health, education and protection of a society’s most disadvantaged citizens — addressing inequity — not only will give all children the opportunity to fulfill their potential but also will lead to sustained growth and stability of countries. This is why the focus on equity is so vital. It accelerates progress towards realizing the human rights of all children, which is the universal mandate of UNICEF, as outlined by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, while also supporting the equitable development of nations.

The current Ukrainian crisis had a significant impact on the lives of children and families in communities throughout the country. According to official statistics, around 1.2 million refugees have been registered in Poland. Around 50% of them are children under 18 years and around 75% of them are women and children. UNICEF has established an emergency response office in Poland and initiated a cooperation agreement with the national and municipality authorities and local NGOs to provide crisis support to the Ukrainian Refugees.

Under the guidance of the Social and Behaviour Change Chief and in close collaboration with other members of the UNICEF Emergency Response Office in Poland, the Feedback and Accountability to Affected Populations Specialist will provide technical and operational support in the management, coordination and implementation of the Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP) interventions ensuring that feedback, views and complains of affected people are incorporated into all stages of the programme cycle. Using the feedback from the affected communities as well as social and behavioral sciences approaches the AAP Specialist will develop strategies to engage refugees in the design of solutions for sustainable behavior and social change.
