Emergency response to crises, conflicts, and natural disasters is a priority for us. Thanks to its financial independence, strong partnerships, and the commitment of its teams, Doctors of the World deploys rapid and tailored responses to meet the needs of affected populations.
The Emergency Response Unit primarily intervenes in countries where the organization already has a presence, but can also be mobilized in new contexts when access to healthcare is severely compromised and local capacities are insufficient. It also provides operational and technical support to the missions of the regional hubs in preparing and implementing their emergency responses.
As a member of the Emergency Response Unit’s rapid response team, you will be deployed to emergency situations to launch new interventions or reinforce existing teams. You may also participate in exploratory missions, the opening of new missions or bases, provide temporary operational reinforcements (“gap-filling”), or support the implementation of specific medical activities, such as training or emergency preparedness initiatives.
Your tasks
Your main responsibilities are:
Field deployment
- Conduct qualitative health assessments related to humanitarian needs during exploratory missions
- Develop the program’s responses and strategy
- Participate in the development and implementation of the emergency preparedness and response plan (EPREP)
- Drafting project proposals and participating in the preparation of budgets submitted to donors
- Coordinate the implementation of the emergency health program
- Oversee the purchasing, inventory management, and distribution processes for pharmaceutical products.
- Identify the healthcare staffing needs for emergency programs and ensure the rapid recruitment, integration, and training of new staff.
- Participate in drafting reports for donors
- To monitor and analyze results in order to improve the effectiveness and quality of programs
- Ensure that MdM policies and procedures are respected by the entire team and program activities
- Ensure representation and coordination with other agencies, the local government, donors and other stakeholders
Support from headquarters in conjunction with the Emergency Unit
- Provide emergency preparedness and response support to MdM program teams in the countries
- Contribute to the development of tools and protocols for MdM’s emergency operations
- Actively participate in initiatives to prepare and build the capacity of teams
- Contribute to the development of the overall strategic approach to emergency health response
- Leveraging experience gained and developing lessons learned
- To ensure active humanitarian monitoring
The division of working time between field and headquarters is estimated at 80%-20%.
The duration of a field deployment is a maximum of three (3) months, and is followed by a recovery period.
Your colleagues
You will work under the supervision of the head of the emergency response unit based at headquarters. When deployed in the field, you will report directly to the mission’s general coordinator. You will have a working relationship with the emergency response unit’s health liaison officer based at headquarters. You will work closely with the mobile response team.
You are the right person if you:
- You hold a medical or paramedical degree; a Master’s degree in public health is an asset
- You must have at least four years of experience in a similar role or in the humanitarian sector.
- Have experience in public health and community health
- You have overseen sexual and reproductive health and nutrition programs
- Have experience in epidemic management and emergency response
- You have conducted negotiations with local authorities and partners in unstable contexts.
- Demonstrate strong adaptability and resilience to stress in complex security environments.
- Master the Microsoft Office suite
- Fluent in both written and spoken French and English

- Flexibility and adaptability are not among your strongest qualities; frequent travel and regular team changes present a challenge for you.
