Job Title: Peer Welfare & Psychosocial Coordinator
Function: Programme Implementation
Job Group: Programme
Duty Station: Roving within Sudan
Technical Line Manager: Head of Mission
Line Management Responsibility: Yes, in the future
Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) is a dynamic, international non-governmental organization. We work with people affected by violent conflicts to enhance their security and dignity through Unarmed Civilian Protection (UCP). We work to reduce violence, protect civilians in countries affected by violent conflict and its aftermath, and help transform the world’s response to conflict situations.
OVERVIEW
NP is in the process of scaling up its country programme in Sudan. Through its application of Unarmed Civilian Protection (UCP), NP focuses on the application of direct protection including protective accompaniment, rumour control and early warning early response to interrupt cycles of violence and enhance nonviolent responses to conflict. NP works together with communities most affected by violent conflict and other stakeholders to strengthen local capacities for nonviolent self-protection, violence prevention and conflict mitigation.
Over the past few years Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) has integrated mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) into the practice of UCP. This integral approach is based on a peer-to-peer approach built for non-specialised personnel. It is applied by trained unarmed civilians through a task-shifting strategy based on evidence-based, low-intensity and early psychological interventions for psychosocial support. It is called the Peer Welfare Programme, which NP has been implemented since early 2024, notably in Ukraine and Myanmar. Under your guidance and direction, NP aims to implement the Peer Welfare Programme in Sudan.
ABOUT YOU
You have experience in providing mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) to communities in conflict and an ability to guide non-specialist protection teams and local partners in integrating psychosocial support into their protection programming. You have a curiosity to expand the horizons of MHPSS and an affinity to ground these efforts into local approaches to healing that already exist in communities. You have an ability to connect physical protection with mental health, trauma support and healing and support internal and external peer support. You are excited to be on the road, supporting our teams in various locations in Sudan and not daunted by on-going civil conflict and extremely high levels of displacement.
You have a genuine commitment to working at the community level and skilled at building trusting relationships in an extremely polarized political climate.
