Background
The vocational training in Mobile Repair and Maintenance aims to address the growing demand for mobile phone technicians across Northeast Syria, particularly in urban and semi-urban areas like Raqqa and Hajin. Based on the findings of the gender and disability-sensitive market assessment (Activity 1.1.1), mobile maintenance emerged as a viable employment and self-employment opportunity for persons with disabilities (PWDs) due to its low barrier to entry, high market demand, and suitability for small-scale businesses.
AGO is implementing this 40-day training program to empower PWDs with technical, diagnostic, and repair skills to become self-reliant and contribute meaningfully to the local economy.
Objectives of the Training
- Equip participants with fundamental knowledge of mobile phone hardware and software.
- Train participants in diagnostic, repair, and maintenance techniques for a range of mobile devices.
- Provide practical skills in soldering, screen and battery replacement, software flashing, and parts calibration.
- Enhance participants’ entrepreneurial capabilities to start their own mobile repair businesses.
- Promote the inclusion of PWDs in digital and tech-based economic sectors.
Training Methodology
- Theoretical Modules:Â Covering mobile phone components, common issues, tools and safety, basic electronics, and customer service.
- Hands-On Practice:Â Step-by-step repair of devices, disassembly/reassembly, software repair, and live troubleshooting.
- Inclusive Design:Â Training rooms and materials adapted to the needs of PWDs, including ergonomic workstations and simplified guides.
- Trainer Capacity Building:Â Trainers will receive orientation on disability inclusion and adaptive instruction techniques.
Expected Outcomes
By the end of the training, participants are expected to:
- Identify and repair common hardware and software issues in mobile devices.
- Understand diagnostic tools and repair equipment usage.
- Follow safety standards in electronics repair.
- Demonstrate confidence in dealing with customers and managing basic repair services.
- Explore pathways to employment in mobile shops or launch their own services.
Target Group
- Persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Raqqa and Hajin, from host, displaced, and returnee communities.
- Priority will be given to those with an interest in technology and the ability to work with small electronic parts.
Trainers’ Responsibilities
- Deliver both theoretical and practical training in mobile maintenance.
- Adapt content delivery to suit the physical and cognitive needs of PWDs.
- Guide participants through hands-on repair tasks and assess their progress.
- Maintain safety and functionality of tools and training materials.
- Submit training reports and assessment results.
AGO Responsibilities
- Provide mobile repair kits, practice devices, and materials.
- Ensure accessible training environments.
- Offer logistical and technical support throughout the training period.
- Facilitate feedback collection, reporting, and potential referrals to job opportunities.
- Explore provision of small toolkits or microgrants for participants post-training.
Follow-up Mechanism
- Pre/Post Assessment:Â To evaluate participant skill development.
- Daily Attendance and Participation Records.
- Participant Feedback:Â To assess satisfaction and address challenges.
- Post-Training Support:Â Including mentorship, business planning advice, and job referrals where possible.
