Coordinator of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support – Caracas, Venezuela At Help in Action

Following the earthquakes that hit the country hard on 24/06/2026, AeA is looking to reinforce its team on the ground to support the activation of an emergency response in the areas most affected by the earthquakes.

Aim:

  • The Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Coordinator will be responsible for providing technical leadership and overseeing the identification of psychosocial needs and the implementation of SMAPS activities, ensuring compliance with international standards. They will also design and develop protocols, training tools, and supervision tools relevant to quality intervention and coordinate with relevant stakeholders in the community, ensuring complementarity and relevance in the intervention.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct needs assessments in SMAPS in the affected communities and propose relevant interventions.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of an efficient and context-relevant SMPAS programmatic strategy, supporting the Program Management in the identification and mitigation of risks, coordination opportunities and synergies on the ground.
  • Implement and monitor mental health and psychosocial support activities in the intervention areas.
  • To provide technical assistance and support to implementing teams and partners for the development of safe spaces and psychosocial activities in emergencies, crisis situations and recovery processes.
  • Prepare and consolidate reports of SMAPS activities following internal guidelines and delivery times of AeA and the donor.
  • Contribute to the development of relevant technical tools for the implementation of activities, as well as to the development of an integrated case referencing mechanism.
  • Design and implement training in psychological first aid (PFA), psychosocial support, self-care and community mental health for staff and implementing partners.
  • Support the design and use of assessment and monitoring tools to measure the impact and quality of SMAPS interventions, ensuring the application of sensitive data protection standards and the organization’s information management policy.
  • Recruit, in coordination with the management and human resources team, the personnel under your direct or technical responsibility
  • Develop individual action plans and conduct periodic professional evaluations of the team under your direct or technical responsibility.
  • Identify the training needs of SMAPS staff and provide organizational and technical support for training.
  • Carry out strategic support missions for teams in the field
  • Represent the organization in inter-institutional coordination spaces and meetings with key allies in the field of mental health, psychosocial support and protection.
  • Perform other job-related tasks as assigned by your immediate supervisor, based on institutional needs.

Requirements

Knowledge and experience:

  • University degree in psychology
  • Minimum experience of three (3) years in the implementation and management of SMAPS programs or in psychosocial care in emergencies.
  • Knowledge of IASC guidelines and policies on mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) in emergency situations, as well as humanitarian principles, the Sphere Initiative and the Common Humanitarian Assessment Framework (CHS)
  • Experience in the design, monitoring and evaluation of MHPSS program activities and protection
  • Knowledge of psychological first aid, community mental health, self-care and psychosocial protection.
  • Experience in facilitating training and workshops for volunteers or technical staff.
  • Ability to work with vulnerable populations and in sensitive contexts, applying safe and culturally relevant approaches.
  • Ability to prepare technical reports and systematize experiences.
  • Knowledge of the health system (including organization, levels of care and capacities, medical and mental and psychosocial health profiles, national health programs)

Languages

  • Essential: Spanish
  • Highly desirable: English.

Geographical mobility

  • National Based in Caracas
  • Availability to travel within the country.

Equipment

  • It is highly desirable that you have sufficient equipment to perform your function remotely: laptop and/or computer, good internet connection, among others.

Terms of the offer:

  • Start date: immediate
  • Contract duration: 6 months with the possibility of extension depending on available funding
  • Full-time position: 40 hours per week
  • Work location: Caracas, Venezuela
  • Remuneration/Salary in accordance with the Ayuda en Acción Remuneration Policy.

  • Valid criminal record certificate (no criminal record).
  • Valid certificate from the Central Register of Sex Offenders and Trafficking in Persons (no criminal record), in case the position involves contact with minors.
