How can you make a difference? Key functions / Responsibilities

The First Aid Officer is responsible for providing timely, safe, and quality pre-hospital care and first aid interventions to people affected by the earthquake, performing initial patient stabilization, triage on the ground, and coordinating medical evacuation to assigned care centers, under the principles of the Red Cross.

He/She will be in charge of:

  • Quickly assess the disaster environment to ensure the safety of yourself, your team, and patients before intervening (Safe Access).
  • Provide advanced first aid to those injured by the earthquake (treatment of trauma, wounds, burns, immobilization, CPR, among others).
  • Perform triage (classification of injured by severity) in multiple victim situations to prioritize care and transfer of critical cases.
  • Ensure that your unit’s trauma kit, immobilization equipment, oxygen, and other medical supplies are complete, clean, and ready for daily deployment.
  • Coordinate closely with the Hospital Management Officer the logistics of transfer and reporting of critical patients who will be admitted to the public health network or Red Cross satellite modules.
  • Work in tandem with the team of psychologists in the field to identify people with severe anxiety attacks or emotional shock who require immediate support.
  • Fill out the pre-hospital care forms or records of patients treated in the field, detailing the person’s condition and the initial treatment applied.
  • Immediately report any emerging health risks detected in the community (disease outbreaks, lack of drinking water in shelters, etc.) to the Health Coordination.
  • Perform other tasks assigned by your immediate superiors to ensure the fulfillment of organizational objectives.

To qualify as a builder of the Venezuelan humanitarian system, you must meet the following requirements:

  • University degree in medicine, nursing, public health degree, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Paramedic, Firefighter.
  • Minimum experience of three (3) years in the implementation of programs and projects in the humanitarian or public health field.
  • Knowledge of program monitoring and evaluation methodologies.
  • Experience in administrative and financial management of health projects.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to prepare technical and operational reports.
  • Fluency in Spanish. Basic knowledge of English is desirable.
  • Commitment to the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent.
  • High sense of responsibility, professional ethics and confidentiality.
