This internship is part of an academic, professional or socio-professional training program, and must meet the conditions set by the Employment Market Supervisory Board (CSME). The duration of the internship, set by the tripartite agreement, is 6 to 12 months at 100%.

Context & Mission

Médecins Sans Frontières is an independent international medical and humanitarian organization that provides care to people in need, to people affected by natural or man-made disasters and to victims of armed conflict, without discrimination and regardless of race, religion, beliefs or political affiliation (MSF Charter).

The Public Fundraising Unit is one of the seven business units of the Department of Communication and Fundraising. The intern will report to the Middle Donor Coordinator and will work closely with all members of the Direct Marketing and Donor Relations teams. They will actively participate in the development of MSF Switzerland’s various fundraising activities.

The Middle Donor Fundraising Intern actively contributes to the quality of MSF Switzerland’s donor relations (in conjunction with the Direct Marketing Officers and Middle Donor Officers) by responding to their various requests. He/she actively contributes to the development of various fundraising activities and the smooth running of the unit.

Main responsibilities

Management and Administrative Monitoring of Donations and the Database

  • Learn about donor data analysis and presentation of results.
  • Validate daily transactions by identifying and codifying donations received on postal, bank, and electronic accounts. This includes transmitting information to team members and assisting in tracking down anonymous or semi-anonymous donations.
  • Prepare the donor thank you process.
  • Process physical mail.
  • Update and enrich the database to ensure its integrity and relevance.

Donor Relations

  • Learn how to design and distribute communication materials (mailings, emails, questionnaires) in line with the organization’s image.
  • Develop skills in written communication and donor relations, including retention and strengthening the connection with the organization
  • Strengthen donor support and loyalty using all available opportunities.
  • Assist in developing support proposals and sending documentation to donors.
  • Contribute to the organization and monitoring of cell events, such as breakfasts, meetings, donor events and webinars.
  • Participate in the design and updating of communication materials as well as the writing of various contents (email templates, project sheets, support proposals, invitations to events, etc.).

Marketing Project Management

  • Participate in sending micro-mailings, including writing, monitoring translations with translators, layout with the graphic designer, and checking proofs for printing and personalization.
  • Send digital emails and surveys, including content and image research, copywriting, translation tracking, and layout in Mailchimp.

Other Objectives

  • Discover how an international humanitarian organization works by participating in team meetings and projects.
  • Contribute to the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data from mid-level donor questionnaires and present the results.
  • Participate in cell meetings and be responsible for taking notes.
  • Attend information meetings for departmental working groups and stay informed about various MSF projects.
  • Discover administrative monitoring methods and data management in a CRM dedicated to donor relations.

Desired profile

  • Currently studying or completing a graduate course
  • Be eligible for an internship agreement with a third party
  • Excellent command of French
  • Good level of German
  • Good level of English
  • Experience in a donor/client relations department is a plus
  • Rigorous and with a great sense of detail
  • Comfortable with numbers
  • Proactivity, autonomy, team spirit, rigor and organizational skills,
  • Good writing skills and interest, impeccable spelling,
  • Strong interest in humanitarian work, Interest in digital,
  • Proficiency in common IT tools, comfortable with Excel
  • Flexibility and team spirit

Working conditions

  • Mandatory tripartite internship agreement
  • 6-month internship at 80-100% (depending on the internship agreement)
  • Based in Geneva
  • Start date: As soon as possible
  • Gross monthly salary: CHF 2,000.-
